Dr Canice Nolan has a BSc in zoology from University College Dublin (Ireland, 1979) and a PhD (1984) based on heavy metal toxicology research at the European Commission Joint Research Centre in Ispra (Italy). He continued with a Postdoc (1984-1986) at the University of Rhode Island, studying effects of occupational and environmental exposure to heavy metals. During 1986-1991 he worked for the International Atomic Energy Agency at the Monaco Laboratory where he worked on movement of radioactivity in food chains.
In 1991, Dr Nolan joined DG Research of the European Commission and was responsible for program management on Environment, Health and Chemical Safety.
In 1998 he moved to DG Agriculture with responsibility for pesticides residues legislation and continued in this field when it was moved to DG Health and Consumer Protection,
where he became Head of the Plant Protection Products Sector. In 2004, he moved to the Food Safety, Health and Consumer Affairs Section at the Delegation of the European Commission to the USA, where he became Head of Section from 2005-2008.
In 2008, he returned to DG Health and Consumer Affairs where he is Senior Coordinator for Global Health in the Public Health Directorate.

By 1994 Dr Nolan had more than 70 scientific articles, book chapters etc. published.
1999-2004: Head of EC Delegation to OECD Pesticides Working Group.
1998-2003: Head of EC Delegation to the Codex Committee on Pesticides Residues.
1993-2005: Member of SGOMSEC (Scientific Group of Methodologies for the Safety Assessment of Chemicals).
2001-2005: Member of ILSI group on Agricultural Chemicals Safety Assessment.
2003-2006: Member of ILSI Emerging Issues Committee.
2008-present: Member of the US Institute of Medicine roundtable on Environment, Health and Medicine.
