Chris Brookes has worked in the health field for 15 years, and for the 10 years prior to that worked in development, including leading on statutory donor funding for a major UK development charity. He has extensive experience of project management and design.
Chris was most recently International Project Manager for Health Inequalities in the Department of Health for England. This involved developing policy positions for the Department of Health in relation to the European Union, supporting high-level work and engagement with WHO, and supporting inward and outward missions focusing on health inequalities and action on the social determinants of health.
Chris has organised high-level international meetings including at Ministerial level, and has facilitated policy learning and engagement between countries, including the Caribbean, sub-Saharan Africa and the wider European region. He has experience of work in countries ranging from Jamaica, Kenya, Tanzania, Nigeria and Burundi, through to Albania, Estonia, Bulgaria and Kazakhstan.
In addition, Chris has a broad range of international experience with the World Bank, DFID, the EU and WHO in putting together bids, and managing and reporting on successful implementation, and has been the national focal point for the European Commission Public Health Programme.
Among his primary interests are questions as to how to foster effective international learning, and what supports effective policy transfer between countries. His commitment is to developing the best possible processes for supporting active learning between countries to promote health and tackle health inequalities, with a particular focus on the underlying societal causes of ill-health.
