Support to the transition and establishment of a Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA)

CARICOM (Caribbean Community) is coordinating the amalgamation of five regional public health institutions into a new Caribbean Public Health Agency (CARPHA), with the support of Ministries of Health across the CARICOM region and the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO). HAPI has provided consultancy, advice and support in the following areas:

  • project management of the transition process

  • communications strategy for the transition process

  • social marketing - placement for six months from partner organisation the National Social Marketing Centre in the UK

  • donors and stakeholder engagment

Public health leadership and workforce

We worked with the Faculty of Public Health, as one of the HAPI partners to support the Caribbean Coordination Office of PAHO in the development of a review of capacity and standard setting for public health in the Caribbean. A key outcome of this work was the development of practical commitments to build public health leadership across the Caribbean and to tackle the wider determinants of health.

University of the West Indies (UWI)

HAPI supported UWI through a focused study tour and twinning process to consider how they could develop capacity to deliver a DrPH course. The course, which started in 2009, is intended to provide a body of high-level public health specialists able to play a key role in influencing the broad range of policy areas which impact on health in the region.
